The Life of P.T. Barnum, by P. T. Barnum

Synopsis

'For more than fifty years, Phineas T. Barnum embodied all that was grand and fraudulent in American mass culture. Over the course of a life that spanned the nineteenth century (1810-91), he inflicted himself upon a surprisingly willing public in a variety of guises, from newspaper editor (or libeler) to traveling showman (or charlatan) and distinguished public benefactor (or shameless hypocrite). Barnum deliberately cultivated his ambiguous public image through a lifelong advertising campaign, shrewdly exploiting the cultural and technological capabilities of the new publishing industry'.'While running his numerous shows and exhibitions, Barnum managed to publish newspaper articles, expose of fraud (not his own), self-help tracts, and a series of best-selling autobiographies, each promising to give 'the true history of my many adventures'. Updated editions of "The Life of P. T. Barnum" appeared regularly, allowing Barnum to keep up with demand and prune the narrative of details that might offend posterity'.'The present volume is the first modern edition of Barnum's original and outrageous autobiography, published in 1855 and unavailable for more than a century.Brazen, confessional, and immensely entertaining, it immortalizes the showman who hoodwinked customers into paying to hear the reminiscences of a woman presented as George Washington's 161-year-old nurse, the impresario who brought Jenny Lind to America and toured Europe with General Tom Thumb, and the grand entrepreneur of the American Museum of New York. Above all, it ensures that Barnum would be properly remembered...exactly as he created himself'.

For more than fifty years, Phineas T. Barnum embodied all that was grand and fraudulent in American mass culture. Over the course of a life that spanned the nineteenth century (1810-91), he inflicted himself upon a surprisingly willing public in a variety of guises, from newspaper editor (or libeler) to traveling showman (or charlatan) and distinguished public benefactor (or shameless hypocrite).Barnum deliberately cultivated his ambiguous public image through a lifelong advertising campaign, shrewdly exploiting the cultural and technological capabilities of the new publishing industry. While running his numerous shows and exhibitions, Barnum managed to publish newspaper articles, exposes of fraud (not his own), self-help tracts, and a series of best-selling autobiographies, each promising to give "the true history of my many adventures".Updated editions of The Life of P. T. Barnum appeared regularly, allowing Barnum to keep up with demand and prune the narrative of details that might offend posterity. The present volume is the first modern edition of Barnum's original and outrageous autobiography, published in 1855 and unavailable for more than a century. Brazen, confessional, and immensely entertaining, it immortalizes the showman who hoodwinked customers into paying to hear the reminiscences of Joyce Heth, ostensibly George Wash-ington's 161-year-old nurse. It also unveils the grand entrepreneur of the American Museum of New York and the impresario who brought Jenny Lind to America and toured Europe with General Tom Thumb. Above all, it ensures that Barnum would be properly remembered ... exactly as he created himself.

Every entrepreneur should read this book. PT demonstrates a wonderful blend of basic humanity, and a clear understanding of human nature. The incidental gems are his vocabulary, obviously resulting from a traditional "great books" education, and the lucid flow of his story-telling. Easy flow for reading in one or many sittings. A great surprise gift for your favorite entrepreneurs. The paperback is actually rather thick; I have the Kindle edition, which is superb!

This autobiography of PT Barnum is interesting, and shows an interesting look at life in the early 1800s. Barnum was a religious man, and lived a life filled with humor. However, the book is longer than expected, and does not fill in the details of his life as thoroughly as one might expect. For anyone looking for more details to match The Greatest Showman, this book is not what you are looking for.

The book was a very easy to read and an interesting look into the life and philosophy of P. T. Barnum. I had thought he was only involved in the circus business, but he was much more. The book is told in the first person and his writing style is conversational. If you saw the Greatest Showman and are interested in the reality, you really need to read this book. The only thing I missed is a postscript detailing his final days.

If you are interested in what life was like back in the 1850's '60's, this is the book for you. The downside to the book is that P.T. is quite the talker and just goes on and on. The book also leaves off where the circus era takes over his business. I found the short version of Barnum's life more interesting but the autobiography a lot more fun. Barnun is very honest in this book about himself and his frauds (humbugs as called then) he did. A long book but fun and interesting.

I had to keep reminding myself that what I was reading was a historical piece and not a modern day written biography or life account
